Diplomacy, Debates, and a Giant Rice Krispies Treat: GHS Takes on Model UN
In this episode of Beyond the Bureau, we dive into Garfield High School’s journey to Columbus for the Ohio Model United Nations (OMUN) event! Join us as seniors Abygail Seiler and sophomore Hannah Timmons share their experiences navigating intense debates, crafting resolutions, and battling it out for global problem-solving supremacy.
From addressing real-world issues like gang violence in Jamaica and rising sea levels in Kiribati to learning the strict rules of parliamentary procedure, the team had their hands full. "One of the biggest parts of Model UN is learning all the rules," Timmons explains. "You have to be really careful about how you address the assembly, and if you mess up, people will bang on the tables—it’s really intense."
But it wasn’t all business—there was plenty of fun along the way. The trip featured group dinners, an energetic International Summit dance (complete with body surfing!), and an unexpected team-bonding moment over a giant Rice Krispies treat. "Danny got this huge Rice Krispies treat at Cracker Barrel on the way down, and by the end of the night, everyone on our floor had a piece," Timmons recalls. "It was totally unsanitary, but it was hilarious."
Tune in as we discuss the highs, the challenges, and the unforgettable moments that made this Model UN trip one for the books. Plus, find out why the team is already strategizing for next year’s competition!
Don’t miss this episode filled with diplomacy, debate, and, of course, some deliciously chaotic fun.
